Also the package has an impact on the environment
Wellplast AB has a comprehensive view of environmental thinking both when it comes to package solutions for the customers and when it comes to internal questions. “Also the package has an impact on the environment” is a somewhat provokative saying but it really means something. To have to produce a new product because it has been damaged during transportation or storing often leads to a very big environmental impact. The most important guiding word for the developers at Wellplast AB is function. The second goal is to use as little material as possible in each package solution. It is thus up to the sales rep to try to influence the customer in the right direction when it comes to logistics and waste handling. The company is continuously aiming at improving within all these areas.
Use of resources
Wellplast® is a modern packaging material where the environmental impact is an important aspect of the development process. The unique material mix together with the construction makes Wellplast®one of the best choices of transport packaging on the market.
- Very low use of energy during the life cycle, raw material supply and production.
- Very little fossil raw material (natural gas or oil)
- Very good recycling capacity
- Good possibilities for energy recycling at burning. Burning can take place without emission of environmentally hazardous substances.

- Biodegradable by UV radiation
Wellplast®consists to 55% of chalk and to 45% PP plastic. Polypropylene is together with polyethylene the two most environmentally friendly types of plastic. In order to minimize the plastic volume, chalk is used in the material. Apart from the function advantages, this mix of material leads to a very low resource consumption.
The Wellplast®packaging follows EU’s requirements “The European Union packaging and packaging waste directive (Council Directive 94/62/EC)” and “the CEN standards EN 13428-13432”.
– In all packaging solutions the volume is minimized in relation to the function. – The material does not contain any heavy metals or other of hazardous substances. – The material can be energy recycled by burning. Energy value > 7 MJ/kg.
The alternatives when it comes to recycling differ depending on where and within which line of business the packages are used. Wellplast AB tries to influence its customers to reach as high up as possible on the waste handling steps. Consideration has of course to be taken to the environmental impact during the transportation. Wellplast® (Recycling) Hard plastic (Recycling) Soft plastic (Recycling or burning) Combustible material (Burning) Unassorted If there is a large consumption of Wellplast® in one place, Wellplast AB can organise recycling where the used packages are collected and recycled. Used Wellplast® is an attractive material within the plastic industry and the material is being recycled into road poles and plastic pallets. If burning (energy recycling) is the alternative, the residues become chalk, CO2 and water. The energy value of the material is high. When the material is being burnt the chalk helps neutralize the acidic gases and can then be used to decrease the level of acidity in refuse dumps.

Wellplast® is marked 07 for other plastics and PP KD55 according to the SIS standard 6120.
Degradability and bio plastics
Wellplast® is not biodegradable today but like other plastic materials it is slowly degraded by the UV radiation (sun light). Wellplast® is primarily used on the European market where waste sorting works well and consequently biodegradability is of no advantage. Should there be a need for biodegradability, this can be made with additives. The development of bio-plastic materials (plastic of a biological origin such as corn) is thoroughly observed and can in the future be an alternative to the plastic material currently used.
